Discover Boggle Hole Beach: A Hidden Gem in North Yorkshire
Nestled along the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline, Boggle Hole Beach is an unspoilt, peaceful cove that feels like stepping back in time. Whether you're looking for a tranquil escape or an adventure packed with folklore and mystery, this beach is a must-visit. For dog owners, history buffs, or those with a passion for the supernatural, Boggle Hole ticks all the right boxes. It’s not just a stunning seaside destination but a place steeped in legend—home to the mysterious “Boggle,” a mischievous creature believed to dwell in the cave on the beach.
In this blog post, I’ll take you on a virtual tour of Boggle Hole Beach and share why it’s one of my top recommendations for anyone exploring North Yorkshire’s coastline. And if you want to see it all in action, check out my latest YouTube video where I delve into the legend of the Boggle and take you along for a spooky, scenic beach walk.
The Legend of the Boggle
Let’s start with what makes Boggle Hole truly unique—the legend of the Boggle. According to ancient folklore, a "boggle" is a type of mischievous spirit or creature said to haunt remote places. The boggle of Boggle Hole is believed to live in the dark cave on the beach, lurking in the shadows and playing tricks on those brave enough to venture too close. While some say the Boggle is harmless and only seeks to spook, others claim it's a more malevolent creature, guarding treasure or hiding secrets in its lair.
Over the years, many visitors to Boggle Hole have reported feeling a strange presence near the cave or hearing eerie sounds carried by the wind. Some say it’s just the wildness of the coastline playing tricks, but others believe the Boggle is real, waiting to make its next appearance. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, the legend adds a layer of excitement and mystery to your visit!
If you’re intrigued by the Boggle, I dive deeper into this spooky tale in my latest YouTube video. I explore the cave, share local stories, and capture the eerie atmosphere that makes Boggle Hole so special. If you’re into history, myths, or just a good ghost story, you won’t want to miss it!
Dog-Friendly and Unspoilt
One of the reasons Boggle Hole Beach is a favorite among visitors (including myself!) is that it’s dog-friendly and wonderfully unspoilt. If you’re like me and love taking your furry friend on adventures, Boggle Hole is perfect. The beach is open to dogs all year round, so you don’t need to worry about restrictions. My dog Missy had an absolute blast racing across the sand and exploring the rocky outcrops.
The beach itself is a natural beauty—quiet, wild, and untouched by the crowds you’ll find at more commercial seaside spots. It’s the kind of place where you can walk for miles without bumping into another soul, surrounded by towering cliffs and the sound of waves crashing against the shore. The lack of development here means you get a true sense of nature’s raw beauty, making it a peaceful retreat for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle.
Top Tip: Get There Early!
A word to the wise: if you’re planning a visit, make sure to arrive early. Boggle Hole has limited parking at the top of the cliffs, and on busy days, those spots fill up fast. There’s no sprawling car park like you might find at other beaches, which helps preserve its untouched charm, but it does mean you’ll need to be prepared. My top tip is to get there first thing in the morning to snag a spot, especially during peak holiday times or weekends.
From the car park, it’s a bit of a walk down to the beach itself. The path can be steep in places, so wear sturdy shoes, and remember that what goes down must come up—you’ll have to tackle that walk back to the car! But trust me, the effort is worth it. The moment you set foot on the beach and take in the stunning views, you’ll forget all about the climb.
A Stop at the Youth Hostel Café
One thing to note is that Boggle Hole is home to a quaint Youth Hostel with a café, offering refreshments and snacks. It’s the perfect spot to grab a cup of tea after your beach adventure, though we didn’t try it out on our visit. I’ve heard great things from others who’ve stopped by, so if you’re planning to spend the day here, it might be worth checking out. It’s also a handy place to stop if you’re walking along the Cleveland Way, as Boggle Hole is one of the stops on this famous coastal route.
Perfect for Exploring North Yorkshire
Boggle Hole Beach is ideally located if you’re planning a North Yorkshire coastal holiday. Just a short drive from Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby, and Scarborough, it’s the perfect place to stop and spend a few hours before heading on to more well-known destinations. Robin Hood’s Bay, with its narrow cobbled streets and fascinating smuggler history, is just a stone’s throw away. Whitby, famous for its connections to Dracula and its striking abbey, is only a 20-minute drive up the coast. Scarborough, with its traditional seaside attractions, is also within easy reach.
In fact, I’ve got a whole series of videos on my YouTube channel covering some of these amazing places, so if you’re planning a North Yorkshire getaway, be sure to check out my channel for more inspiration.
